2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship – Oakland Recap, Anaheim 2 Preview

Feb 11, 2012 by

Updated 2:30pm! Last Saturday night, the Oakland round of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series showed that this season may be another one for the ages. James Stewart became the fourth rider in four rounds to win the premier Supercross Class, while Eli Tomac became the first repeat winner of the 250 Lites Class for 2012.

Stewart?s win was his first since April of 2011, and it did not come easily. Off the start, Chad Reed had an excellent jump, grabbed the holsehot and immediately opened a small gap over Andrew Short and Josh Hansen. Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, and Ryan Dungey all had mid pack starts, and spent the first few laps fighting their way through the field in order to battle for the lead. And battle they did.

RJ Says: Phoenix Supercross 2012 thoughts, Los Angeles Supercross preview

Feb 10, 2012 by

First off, I want to congratulate KTM, Roger De Coster, and Ryan Dungey for KTM’s first Supercross Class main event win. It’s huge. I know of all the work they have done in the past few years in developing winning machines, teams, and more. Look at what they did with Stefan Everts and Pit Beirer in developing the 350 SX model – two world championships so far with Antonio Cairoli.

KTM in America has been working on the new 450 that Ryan races. It’s a new effort, on a new bike. For Ryan Dungey, his win last Saturday in Phoenix goes a long way in many areas, but I feel the most important is that it adds confidence to the team and Ryan.

Marquez Pulls Out Of Valencia Test To Extend Recuperation Period

Feb 7, 2012 by

Marc Marquez has been forced to pull out of next week's Moto2 test at Valencia with continuing vision problems. The vision problems were a result of his crash during practice at Sepang, caused when marshalls failed to display a flag while there was water on the track. The Spaniard underwent an operation to correct a partial paralysis of the superior oblique muscle in his right eye on January 16th, and had originally planned to return to the track at Valencia, for the Moto2 test scheduled for February 8th-10th.

But Marquez' recovery is not going as fast as the Spaniard and his team had hoped, and the decision to skip the test was made by Marquez' manager Emilio Alzamora, in consultation with Dr Sanchez Dalmau, the surgeon who carried out the operation on Marquez. They felt it was better to wait for Marquez' vision to return to 100% before risking riding a racing motorcycle.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship – Phoenix Recap, Los Angeles Preview

Feb 7, 2012 by

Last Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona, the second round of 2012 Monster Energy Supercross invaded Chase Field. Round one winner Ryan Villopoto came into the weekend brimming with confidence and carried that into qualifying, as he came away with the fastest 450 lap time. But when it came time for racing, luck was not on the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider?s side. Crashes in both his heat and the main event made for a trying evening.

Instead, the good luck rested well within the orange camp, as Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey captured his first win of the season. The victory also marks the Austrian manufacturer’s first ever win in the premier class. And the good fortune did not stop there.

In Supercross Lites, while reigning 250 Class AMA Pro Motocross Champion, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, stomped off with his first win of the year, Dungey?s teammate, Marvin Musquin, came away with a second place finish. His best ever in his ‘young’ AMA Supercross career (although a two time World MX Champion). Wilson?s teammate, Tyla Rattray, had another impressive outing in Phoenix and finished with his second podium in two weeks with a third place finish. Add in the rest of the top three finishers of the Supercross Class, with Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Jake Weimer and Villopoto, and the entire podium was awash in orange and green.

But Villopoto?s result did not come easy. The defending champ got tangled up on the first lap in the treacherous sand section, and fell to dead last before the first lap was completed. But he got right back up and went on a tear, blazing the fastest lap time of the race along the way.

People will now confused for the declaration of Ducati Team if trembled Nicky Hayden will continue his journey on Moto GP 2012.

The team may have big disappointments if Nicky Hayden push him into his limits without the proper time to spin the 1000cc engine. Ducati management says that Nicky Hayden is in huge medical treatment to heal his injuries and absolutely dock in immediately in Moto GP next season. This decision Sucks! I hope that management let Nicky Hayden heal naturally, and give the best for Nicky’s Health. It is for the good and sake of Ducati Malboro Team. Mabuhay!

Following issues regarding Ducati Malboro Team, Franco Battaini spins 1000cc as a substitute for Nicky Hayden, Fraco lead the test with a brilliant 1:34.840 Fastest Lap end with 74 Laps in Test Tormo Valencia Circuit. This 39year old veteran is a big deal, in fact he has numbers of series match creating him a list in Moto GP 2012 line -up and that will be the biggest factor. Take note that this 39 yr old veteran with 15 yrs in experience with a weight of 67 Kg. Is considered as a huge factor. The actions are more intense due to its high displacements Moto GP requires a 1000cc Moto Engines in every single entry. Last GP engines displacement is 800cc and take a lot of intense speed and stumbling actions.

RJ Says: Defending a Supercross Championship and season review

Feb 3, 2012 by

After watching the first three supercross races of the 2011 season, I'll share with you what I see at this point.

Two riders that have really impressed me so far are Ryan Villopoto and Trey Canard. Looking at their fitness, their riding technique, their ability to get thru traffic on the race track, both are far beyond what I thought they would be.

I knew Ryan would be fast. But when a rider has been away from racing for a while, as he has, sometimes it takes a while to knock off the rust. Ryan has looked great after his heat races – obviously the training with Aldon Baker has helped him a lot. I can see his fitness, how much he is sweating, and his ability to retain his breath and breathing after both his heats and main events. It's visible that Ryan has leaned down together with Aldon, and he's in awesome condition.

I thought it would take Trey Canard at least half a season in the premiere Supercross class to where he was really comfortable. As I watch Trey in these first three races, there are certain section of the different tracks where he is faster than either Villopoto or James Stewart. Once Trey puts together the whole track, and an entire 20 laps like that – look for him to win some races this year.

RJ Says: Supercross 2011

Feb 3, 2012 by

Rick Johnson is a seven time AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion. These are his thoughts on the upcoming 2011 AMA / FIM Supercross Series.

Depending on how healthy riders stay during the season, Supercross 2011 could be an incredibly awesome year.

Of course, we all say that every year, but this year could be something special – if most stay healthy.

As I go down a list of riders, my top pick is defending AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey.

Do I think Ryan will dominate Supercross the way he did outdoor MX in 2010? No, but after watching Ryan over the past few years, and especially at the MX of Nations in Italy in 2009, I’ve seen his confidence go up and up. Each time out, he gets a little faster, a little stronger, and smarter.

2012 Sepang 1 MotoGP Test Day 1 Round Up: Yamaha’s Progress, The Phoenix Rises, And CRT Thwarted By Electronics

Feb 2, 2012 by

The MotoGP bikes are finally back on track – though it took a little longer than expected, after an overnight rain shower left the track damp in the morning. Much had been expected of this test, and it has delivered already, after just a single day. In fact the test has been almost perfect, real bikes running on a circuit putting an end to the intrigue and subterfuge that play such a major role in every winter break, whilst raising enough new questions to pique the interest of anyone with a passion for motorcycle racing.

The overnight rain made conditions far from ideal, a fact reflected by the fact that in the main, there was little difference in times between the first day of the 2012 test and the first day of the same test last year, despite the bikes having grown in capacity by 200cc. The extra power was all too evident around the track: controlling wheelies while retaining drive out of corners is going to be key this year, and while the extra torque makes the bigger bikes easier to control, and reduces some of the electronics needed, the resources spent on taming a highly-strung 800cc engine have now been diverted to keeping the front wheel of the fire-breathing 1000s within a parsec or two of the tarmac.

2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship officially underway – Anaheim Recap, Phoenix Preview

Feb 1, 2012 by

As the series heads into round two at Phoenix, Arizona?s Chase Field, potential title contenders have already begun to establish themselves. At Anaheim I, Monster Energy Kawasaki?s Ryan Villopoto walked away with the season kickoff win in the Supercross Class, while Cole Seely captured the Supercross Lites victory for Lucas Oil / Troy Lee Designs / Honda.

Stats and data below courtesy Feld Motor Sports

Villopoto was clearly the fastest rider on the track, and was the only rider during the main to lay down lap times under 1:01. When the checkered flag waved, Ryan was more than 12 seconds ahead of second place finisher Chad Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports/Honda. But the fight for second was the best skirmish of the night. JGR/Toyota/Yamaha?s James Stewart got a mid pack start and was forced to work his way up, while Villopoto, Reed, and Red Bull/KTM?s Ryan Dungey began up front.

Stewart was eventually able to make his way up to Dungey in third, and that?s when things got interesting. The two riders battled back and forth, forcing each other into various mistakes, but Reed made an error on his own, allowing Dungey and Stewart to close the gap. Just as Stewart was gaining on Reed, the JGR rider made yet another mistake, and landed on top of a tuff block in an on/off section, resulting in a crash.
