Concept: BMW F900S by Luca Bar Design

Feb 28, 2012 by

To build the Husqvarna Nuda 900, the Swedish brand started with the 798cc motor from the BMW F800 series, and then bored and stroked the parallel-twin motor to a 898cc displacement. Through its marketing of the Nuda 900 & Nuda 900R, BMW has been sure to include itself, making sure that the connection of BMW’s trusted road-going heritage is tied to the previously dirt-only brand of Husqvarna. It’s been an interesting process for both brands to …

WSBK: Superpole at Phillip Island Cancelled After Tragedy

Feb 27, 2012 by

It is our displeasure to report that Saturday’s World Superbike Superpole qualifying event at Phillip Island was cancelled after a fatality occurred during the Australian Superstock 600 support race. In an incident very similar to the one that took Marco Simoncelli’s life last year, 17-year-old Oscar McIntyre collided with fellow ASTK racers Luke Burgess and Michael Lockhart on the second lap of Saturday’s support race. Though McIntyre received immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries, and event organizers …

REA AND AOYAMA READY FOR SBK2012

Feb 26, 2012 by

Honda World Superbike Team riders Jonathan Rea and Hiroshi Aoyama have declared themselves ready for this weekend?s (24-26 February) opening round of the 2012 World Superbike championship at Phillip Island in Australia.
The Honda pairing completed a two-day official test at the picturesque 4.448km Phillip Island circuit this afternoon on their 2012 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades, marking the start of a year of 20th anniversary celebrations for Honda?s iconic sportsbike.
The test, arranged by championship organiser, InFront Motorsport, was conducted in fine, warm conditions, with track temperatures increasing in the afternoon sessions, as both Honda riders took the opportunity to further test a number of components for their machines, including electronics, chassis and suspension settings and a new swingarm.
The World Superbike paddock will reassemble for the 2012 campaign and the first of 14 rounds this Friday 24 February with the first free practice session scheduled to begin at 11.45am local time. Superpole qualifying will follow on Saturday, with the two 22-lap first-round races on Sunday.
Jonathan Rea ? best time 1m31.913s
It?s been really good to get out on track with our rivals at this test because during our winter testing ? in Qatar in December and here last month ? we?ve been on our own. We?re where we kind of expected to be and we know that to win here is going to be a very big task. Carlos [Checa] is riding very well and consistently but we?re still changing things on the bike because I?m still not 100% satisfied with the set-up. It?s been really good just be on track with the others though, and I?m really enjoying riding bike. I can really feel what the bike?s doing and the electronics are working really well. I?m looking forward to a couple of days off now before we go into Friday?s sessions. We found a bit of a direction with a harder rear and, although the tyre choice in this test has been clear, the race weekend is going to be different again. We played around with springs towards the end of that final se ssion and I was able to lap OK with a harder spring, even when the tyre was worn. That?s a positive and so it?s what we?ll take into Friday morning and move into the new season from there.
Hiroshi Aoyama ? best time 1m32.910s
These two days I have learned a lot more and one thing in particular: that this is a very tough championship! We have been working more on the bike and it?s been good to get more laps and try some set up changes. We?ve found some positive things, especially on corner exit, but other things have not been so good. So we have concentrated on the positive and worked on that to move things forward. At the moment, there is a gap to the top riders, so I hope to catch up a little bit during this first race weekend because I believe there is still some space to improve. It seems that when the conditions and temperatures change here, the feeling with the bike is a little different and, because I don?t have so much experience on the bike, this has been a little difficult. It?s something that is helped not only by changing the setting ? I must adapt, too, and I am learning to do this but I still need some more time. We weren?t able to do so many long runs during this test but we have still found out some ways to improve the tyre life here. Now we just need to get a better lap time.
Pieter Breddels ? technical co-ordinator
We?ve made some steady progress during this test and Jonathan is right there on the pace. It?s difficult to make big steps forward with him but, saying that, he?s up there with the fast guys and we believe he?ll be in a position to fight for the podium in the opening races this weekend. With Hiroshi we believe that we?ve made progress, and even if the lap time is not spectacular, there has been an improvement on the set-up problems we had with the bike during the test here in January. We?re certainly looking forward to going into the race weekend with him. We?ve still got some steps forward to make with Hiroshi?s electronics, too, but we concentrated more on set-up changes during this test. We?re more familiar with Jonathan?s set-up so his electronics are, of course, quite different. All in all, it?s time to go racing and I think we?re ready to see the potential that?s been shown in all this testing.

Rumor: Vectrix Resurrecting Electric Superbike Project?

Feb 25, 2012 by

Although not really a show designed for consumers, the Indianapolis Dealer Expo still manages to generate some good gossip. Convening in Indiana each wintery February, industry folk really only have two things to talk about: the weather and industry rumors — since we’re not a weather blog, we’ll focus on the latter. One of the better rumors to come from the Indy show was that electric scooter manufacturer Vectrix is considering building its electric superbike …

Ricky Carmichael Signature Design Unveiled For 2012 Daytona Supercross By Honda Course

Feb 24, 2012 by

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the fifth-straight year, legendary Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael will challenge riders with his latest signature course design in the 2012 Daytona Supercross By Honda scheduled for Saturday night, March 10, the only AMA Supercross event in Florida this year.

?It?s an honor and a pleasure to design the course for Daytona, where there is so much racing history involved,? said Carmichael, who owns a record five Daytona Supercross By Honda victories. ?The fans are great, and there is a great group of people working at Daytona International Speedway.  I?m flattered that they continue to want me to keep coming back to design their race course.  It?s a pretty cool deal.?

The Ricky Carmichael Signature Design course will draw some parallels to last year?s layout with the placement of the starting gate remaining on pit road and providing fans with a great view of the first turn. It will feature slight changes in the course?s configuration, particularly in the corners.

Checa gets going as second day is completed

Feb 22, 2012 by

Carlos ChecaUnder sunny skies in Australia the best lap times dropped significantly again as Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) picked up the pace and put in a 1 minute 32.2 second lap. The World Champion got down to more work on his overall race set-up today and it paid off, despite an early health scare that he quickly recovered from.

Said Checa, “I did not have a good night last night, suffering from indigestion, and I lost time in the morning. We continued with our plan later in the day and we found a good set-up with front suspension, which I like probably better than our standard. We took more time than normal to confirm that the feeling was right and we did the job today that we planned yesterday.”

Tom Sykes was the second fastest rider, by a tenth, as he once again put in consistent laps on his Kawasaki Racing Team official bike. Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) stepped up his pace today and was himself only a tenth behind Sykes. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing) and Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team) set identical lap times of 1’32.5, with Lascorz putting all the set-up data he has compiled over these two days to good use right at the end.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport riders Leon Haslam and Marco Melandri were sixth and seventh fastest today, as their new look technical team continues to gel together.

Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert Liberty Racing) did not post any times as he has a nasty bout of flu, while David Salom’s crash from yesterday proved to be more irritating for the Pedercini Kawasaki rider than was first thought, as he hurt his right wrist, possibly fracturing his scaphoid. He will try to run again on the final day of the tests.

Local man Dave Johnson had to put a stock engine into his BMW today after his race engine developed a problem, but still improved his best time to a 1’34.7. One more day of unofficial testing remains.

Day 2 Best Times: 1. Carlos Checa 1’32.1; 2. Tom Sykes 1’32.2; 3. Max Biaggi 1’32.3; 4. Eugene Laverty 1’32.5; 5. Joan Lascorz 1’32.5; 6. Leon Haslam 1’32.6; 7. Marco Melandri 1’33.0; 8. Jakub Smrz 1’33.2; 9. Maxime Berger 1’33.3; 10. Ayrton Badovini 1’33.6; 11. Davide Giugliano 1’33.7; 12. Michel Fabrizio 1’33.9; 13. Leon Camier 1’33.9; 14. David Johnson 1’34.7; 15. David Salom 1’34.9; 16. Lorenzo Zanetti 1’35.2; John Hopkins (absent with injury); Sylvain Guintoli (no time)

WMX Rider Insight: Jackie Ives

Feb 19, 2012 by

In only her second season as a professional Motocross racer, Jackie Ives is currently sitting in 16th position for the WMX point standings through the first four rounds of the 2010 AMA Woman’s Motocross Championship Series.

Jackie Ives (17) cheezing on the line at Thunder Valley

You might think ‘How cool is it to be racing professional motocross all over the USA!’ But it’s a lot harder and a lot more work than you might think! Not all racers get the big bucks and the factory rides like James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, and Chad Reed. As a matter of fact, most of the woman racers in the USA have to work quite hard during the week just to make it to the race track!

RJ Says: Phoenix Supercross 2012 thoughts, Los Angeles Supercross preview

Feb 19, 2012 by

First off, I want to congratulate KTM, Roger De Coster, and Ryan Dungey for KTM’s first Supercross Class main event win. It’s huge. I know of all the work they have done in the past few years in developing winning machines, teams, and more. Look at what they did with Stefan Everts and Pit Beirer in developing the 350 SX model – two world championships so far with Antonio Cairoli.

KTM in America has been working on the new 450 that Ryan races. It’s a new effort, on a new bike. For Ryan Dungey, his win last Saturday in Phoenix goes a long way in many areas, but I feel the most important is that it adds confidence to the team and Ryan.

2012 Jerez Moto2 And Moto3 Test Day 1 Times: Luthi Leads Kalexes In Moto2, Kent On Top In Moto3

Feb 18, 2012 by

After a brief few days of rest, the Moto2 and Moto3 riders returned to action, this time heading further south to Jerez after last week's test at Valencia. At the end of the first day, unofficial timing saw Thomas Luthi fastest in the Moto2 class, while Danny Kent took the unofficial honors in Moto3.

The trek south helped with the track conditions, with the temperatures climbing a good deal above those at Valencia, despite a chilly start to the day which left most of the riders confined to their garages until well after 10:30am. Once testing got underway, the order established at Valencia was once again reaffirmed, with the Kalexes proving to be the bike to beat in Moto2, with a smattering of other fast riders on Suters and FTRs joining the fray. The day saw Thom Luthi officially on top, ahead of the Italtrans bikes of Claudio Corti and Takaaki Nakagami, while the Marc VDS riders Mika Kallio and Scott Redding were on the pace of Nakagami. Andrea Iannone was just a fraction off Redding's pace on the FTR Speed Up, while former Spanish champion Angel Rodriquez set the joint 7th fastest time, along with Alex de Angelis and Bradley Smith. Marc Marquez was once again absent, the Catalunya CX rider still not 100% recovered from his eye injury sustained at Sepang last year.

Testing continued today for the Moto2 and Moto3 classes at Valencia, with the temperatures proving a little more cooperative than Wednesday, helped along by the watery February sun. The morning chill remained, though, leaving the teams stuck inside the garages for much of the morning, the action only really getting underway around 11am.

A little more temperature and an extra day of testing saw Scott Redding step the pace up even further: the Marc VDS rider was already under the official Moto2 race lap record on Wednsday, and on Thursday, he took another nine tenths of a second off his best time, smashing Toni Elias' pole record from back in 2010. Redding had company from Andrea Iannone on the second day of testing, with the Speed Master rider lapping the Valencia track just two tenths slower on his FTR Speed Up, and three tenths quicker than Claudio Corti on the Italtrans Kalex.

Where Kalex had dominated the show on Wednesday, the top of the timesheets was much more of a mixture: while Kalex had 5 bikes in the top 10, FTR had their Speed Up machine in 2nd, with Andrea Iannone aboard, while Corsi and Angel Rodriguez took 5th and 8th respectively for the British chassis build. Bradley Smith put his Tech 3 bike into 6th, nine tenths behind the Kalex of Redding.
